At MPH, we like to keep the residents of Yorkshire informed on tips and tricks regarding how to deal with plumbing problems, so we thought why not put together a few techniques that can be used to unblock a shower or bath.
The first step should always be to identity what the cause of the blockage is. Generally the issue has something to do with a build-up of hair and soap scum, so see if you’re able to spot any in the drain. If you do, simply reaching in either with your fingers or some form of grabbing tool and pulling the build-up out can do wonders to fixing your blockage problem.
If this doesn’t work, another obvious solution could be to use a plunger to try and unblock the drain. Before using any kind of chemical solution, try to get rid of the blockage using a cup plunger. If this doesn’t work after a few tries, it could be time to try a different type of method.
A common household trick that has proven effective for unblocking the drains of a shower or bath is the use of baking soda and vinegar.
The first step should be to pour a pot of boiling water down the drain to get it ready for the vinegar and baking soda. After this, pour a small amount of baking soda down the drain and wait for a few minutes before adding a little bit of white vinegar and hot water. If the chemical reaction is effective, the build-up in your drain will be broken down.
If none of these methods work, it’s likely your blockage needs a qualified plumber to attend to it. At MPH, we offer drain unblocking services that are done quickly, efficiently and are very cost-effective.
