The condition of our rivers, sewers and seas may seem like something distant from us but it actually has a bigger impact than we might realise. Not only is the health and functionality of our drains massively affected by what we put down them, the wider health of our natural water systems is also at risk by unwise decisions we make in the home or at work.
Luckily, this can be counteracted by coming together to take mindful action in the month of October – or Unblocktober. In this article, we’ll be exploring what Unblocktober is, why it’s important and how you can easily get involved.
Unblocktober is a yearly awareness month held in the UK that encourages every homeowner and business to think about what they put down their drains – and what impact it could be having.
Since its launch in 2019, thousands of Brits have pledged to change their habits throughout the month of October. By bringing the British public together in a united effort, we can make a difference to our drains, sewers and natural water bodies, and you can sign up to get involved as an individual or as a business.
Many of us don’t realise that what we put down the drains has a massive effect on the natural environment, causing damage to water courses, rivers and seas. This can negatively impact habitats, water quality and also the condition of our drainage systems, causing plastic pollution, foul waste flooding and increased need for repairs.
The ecological and structural impact of our behaviours is being felt in a big way – but we can act now to help reverse the damage already done and prevent exacerbation. And that’s why Unblocktober is so important, because it helps us examine our behaviours and change our actions to be more mindful of our drains and therefore kinder to the environment.
When you pledge to get involved in Unblocktober, you promise to avoid putting the following items down your drains:
Instead, you should put all of the above items in a bin. For cooking sauces, food crumbs and butter, wipe off plates and cutlery before putting them in the dishwasher or sink. You may also want to pop a bin in your bathroom to encourage proper disposal of period and dental products.
Once you get into the swing of things, it’ll be easy to carry on these behaviours throughout October – and beyond! So, get involved today by signing up.
